Very usual question though!  In my experience, smoke testing is more high level testing and sanity testing is less effort testing.  Smoke test will check the major functionalities where as sanity testing will check only the bug fixed area or new functionality or change area.  In short, sanity testing is a very brief testing and smoke testing is more to major functionalities testing.
